Dear members and friends of Hope Church,
Thank you all for being so kind to our family during the months of my recuperation from a broken arm.  Your cards and calls were a quiet source of encouragement, and my helpers at home appreciated the meals given to us.  Thanks also for the lovely floral arrangements brought by the deacons, and Lou Bell never came without food from her "casserole crew."  Special thanks to Tom for his calls and concern for all my family, especially at such a busy time in the life of the church!  In prayerful appreciation,

CHRISTMAS EVE WORSHIP services were exceptional this year.  There have been so many compliments on the presentation of the Nativity and the Tableau Vivant.  The Youth of Hope and their leaders did a tremendous job at both services.  The music was outstanding at both services.  The Deacons ushered at both services, set out the luminaries, and as always managed to get through anything that was not on the schedule.  The Elders graciously served communion at both services and did the lighting of the candles at the candlelight service.  A special thanks to Dr. Tom and Mari McGrath for the lighting, crèche, and props.  Also, thanks to Hope's office staff for their splendid work behind the scenes - preparing special bulletins, gathering information, etc.  So many people were involved in these services that I cannot name them all.  Thank you to all who were involved and gave your time.

ORGANIST/COMPOSER, DR. DAVID ISELE AND VIOLINIST, DR. ONDRAS LIBOR will perform a concert of sacred music for us during the 10:30 a.m. service on March 30. These two musicians are faculty members at the University of Tampa and each has a prestigious resume. Their concert will kick off a month of special events honoring 50 Years of Hope.

ON WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9, take a step back in time to 1958. We’ll celebrate that auspicious year with food, music and entertainment of the day. We’ll also see what some of our friends looked like 50 years ago and we may even have some cars from that period on display. You won’t want to miss this fun filled evening. Please dress for the occasion in period clothes.

COINCIDENTAL WITH OUR CHURCH’S ANNIVERSARY, Hope Creative School will celebrate 35 years of service to our community on Sunday, April 13. Julie Wilson, her teachers and staff have lots of exciting events planned for that day. All alumni of Hope Creative School will be invited to attend and will be recognized during our 10:30 a.m. service. After that we’ll rededicate the school’s garden in memorial to Marcia Jones, the schools first principal. Our deacons will also be offering a BBQ luncheon and picnic that day, so you can enjoy the service, the rededication and lunch as well.

ALSO ON APRIL 13, the Chancel Choir will premiere a work commissioned in honor of our church’s anniversary by composer Andrew Walker, Director of Music at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, in Orlando. Mr. Walker is widely known as a composer and a clinician at music workshops, choir camps and workshops throughout the southeastern United States that he does in association with the Royal School of Church Music. He is a native of Britain and from 1996 through 2002 he was Music Director of the Bach Festival of Central Florida, Lakeland.

CYNTHIA CLAWSON AND BRUCE GREER will highlight our anniversary weekend with a concert in our sanctuary at

7:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 19. Cynthia has received a GRAMMY and five Dove awards for her music and has been called “the most awesome voice in gospel music” by Billboard Magazine. Her accompanist and arranger, Bruce Greer, is also a Dove award winner. Rest assured that the concert these two musicians will share with us will touch your heart, lift your spirit, encourage your faith and launch Hope Presbyterian Church into its next 50 years. You simply must not miss this concert!! Tickets are on sale exclusively to the Hope church family right now at $20 each, but they will go on sale to the general public on March 1. DAVID CALHOUN VOCAL CONCERT Sunday, March 2 – 4 p.m. – Hope Church Sanctuary

THIS VOCAL CONCERT IS A NEW BEGINNING AND A CELEBRATION of being able to sing after thyroid cancer. God has brought me through two thyroid surgeries and radiation only to sing once again. I attended Bowling Green State University and then moved to Boston to study voice at the Boston Conservatory of music. There I sang in the chorus with the Opera Company of Boston. During the storm of 1978 my funds ran out and it was time to move to Florida and live with my parents. That was 30 years ago. Soon I got a job as a music teacher in Polk County Schools. It wasn't long after being a teacher that the desire to perform on stage began pulling on my heart once again. It was time to audition and sing in Hello Dolly. During those auditions I met my wife, Judith Seguin. We were dance partners in Hello Dolly and four months later married at Hope Presbyterian church, on December 27, 1980. We had two sons, David Louis and John Adley. Performances since are: 1981 - Soloist with the Winter Haven Youth Symphony Orchestra, 1984 - "The Daughter of the Regiment", Corporal; 1988 - "Cats", Chorus; 1988- "Mame", Lindsay Woolsay; 1998 - "Broadway Review", Rainbow Connection; 1991- "Man of LaMancha", Padre; 1991- "Babes in Toy1alnd", Toymaster; 1992 - "1776", Quartet; 1996 - "Funny Girl", Tenor; 2000 - "Annie", Bert Healy; 2005- "My Fair Lady", Buckster; and 2007 - "Oklahoma", Ike Skidmore. Please come and join us for my Celebration Concert.

— David Calhoun

New Paraments and Banners

After 30 years of use, the original paraments and banners have been retired to Beth-El Mission.  Dr. Tom McGrath made a call to Beth-El, and even though the paraments and banners were worn and faded, Beth-El was delighted to have them.

The new paraments (pulpit scarf and communion table runner) were purchased from the Parament Memorial Fund.

Hope Church now has four beautiful new banners to hang in the Sanctuary.  The green all-occasion banner and the Christmas banner than hung during Advent were purchased through memorial gifts.

The Ladies of Hope purchased an Easter banner and Pentecost banner for the Sanctuary with funds earned from the bazaar.  The Easter banner will be hung on Ash Wednesday and displayed through Lent.  The Pentecost banner will be displayed on Pentecost Sunday.

The Worship Committee deeply appreciates these gifts and wishes to give special thanks for those who have given to the Parament Fund.

A Word of Hope from Stephen Ministry:

Serving Hope Presbyterian Church as Director of Stephen Ministry and facilitator of Pastoral Care Programs has been my joy and delight. Serving our congregation has been a blessing in my life.

In 1996 Tom McGrath, Jim Rollins and I began discussing the possibility of having Hope enrolled as a Stephen Ministry congregation. In 1997 along with Reverend Bill Bell, we began the enrollment process required by Stephen Ministries and in 1998 Bill and I began training our first class of Stephen Ministers who would share their skills, their knowledge and their love with many of you here at Hope.

After much prayer, I am retiring as Director of this outstanding congregational ministry. Jeff and Joyce Vose, Stephen Leaders, both well trained as Stephen Ministers and as leaders fully equipped to oversee this program and to further develop it, will assume my position.

Thank you for the opportunities you have given me, and for your prayers, support and love. I believe that you will continue to show the same encouragement to Jeff and Joyce.

May God continue to bless each of you as we all serve the Lord Jesus Christ here at Hope Church.

Blessings, Lou Bell, Director
