THE CAROLYN AND IRVING WHEELER
COLUMBARIUM GARDEN

On Palm Sunday, March 16, 2008 Hope Church dedicated the Carolyn and Irving Wheeler Columbarium. The Columbarium was presented to honor Carolyn and Irving by their children, Wes, David, Sally and Mark. We welcome the Columbarium Garden to our Gardens of Hope.

Niches are now being reserved; to insure that you get your first choice of location, please contact Elder Paul Thompson at 326-9555.

GARDEN ANGELS AT HOPE

Hope’s members are just the best!! Where a need is seen, you can just about set your clock on the arrival of wonderful “garden angels.” In that spirit, I would like to thank the following people for their help during the very hectic last days of gardening for the Columbarium Garden dedication - Jan Carmichael, Nancy and Barry Porter, and Lynn Lang who just “showed up” to help put the final touches on the Garden. Lou Bell brought a surprise lunch for the landscape crew. Don Combee donated beautiful annuals for the outdoor planter. Bob Lang donated irrigation supplies. Laura Greenberg graciously prepared in a very short time the violin solo that was such a beautiful part of the dedication.

Marti Brightwell, Bobbie Ebright from the Church Office, and Jerry Ptak (custodian) went the extra mile in helping in so many ways during the process. Peg Robinson, Joy McCollum and Paul Thompson were invaluable in being the forces and imagination behind the Columbarium plans.

And, speaking of angels, in planning for the new “Marcia Jones Butterfly Garden,” it was necessary to get professional help in removing some old and established plants. We learned that Hope’s own Eric Moore (son of Carol and Kenny Moore) had just started a landscaping business (Tropical Turf Care, 651-8414), so we asked him for an estimate. Imagine our joy and appreciation when Eric came back with a “bid” of offering his services to the church and preschool for FREE. As we all know, when you are young and just starting your business, pro bono services are not considered lightly. THANK YOU, Eric, for your work and generosity.

PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

We like to think of our church as a friendly and welcoming place, and it is!  In the quarter hour before worship, our Sanctuary is busy with greetings and conversation.  The Worship Committee affirms the value of this time and also reminds us that as the chimes and prelude call us to worship, many worshipers enjoy the quiet moments of reverence and preparation.  This growing stillness at the beginning of worship is a good thing, too.  In the same way that we all help to make Hope a friendly church, let us also encourage one another in gifts of reverence as worship begins.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

THE FLOWER COMMITTEE wishes to express their sincere gratitude to everyone who donates flowers during the year to beautify our sanctuary.  Your continued support has enabled us to have flowers for Sunday services, Easter and Christmas.

ASH WEDNESDAY

OUR ASH WEDNESDAY MORNING PRAYER SERVICE continues to grow, with 41 members and friends receiving the Lord’s Supper at this year’s observance. Hope Creative School’s morning chapel followed the Morning Prayers. School Director Julie Wilson used the chalice and paten to share with the children the meaning of Communion. Several school parents attended the Ash Wednesday service and then stayed for chapel with their children.

We hope you will plan next year to attend this Ash Wednesday observance which has become a very meaningful time for the church family.

A LETTER TO THE EDITOR:  Do you know what I know? The bazaar committee is absolutely devoted to the cause! They work each week all year long to sort and price merchandise, all your donations, for the bazaar. It's only been several months since I've joined them, but this is a sample of what I've heard them say: "I'll take this home and get the spots out of it I'll take this home and glue it - I'll take these home and package them to make them more attractive - I'll take these electrical pieces home to make sure they work - I'll take this to a dealer or check eBay to see if it's worth more than bazaar prices - a battery in this will make it worth more so I'll get one - my signs will be distributed in a few days." All this behind-the-scenes work by Nancy Porter, Patrice Hatley, Ellen Martin, Linda Haskins, and Pam Roe has been going on for several years and they have developed the bazaar into what it is today.

In addition to this group there is another group that polishes silver, a group that sets up and organizes the boutique, and many, many others that bake delicious goodies. On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday before the bazaar many other volunteers help set up and arrange the merchandise. In addition, several couples prepare and sell hot dogs and drinks to the shoppers. God bless the men for all the hauling, lifting, and arranging before and after the event. I can't name all of you but you were fabulous and please forgive me if I've left anyone out. And above all, please keep your donations coming; everything counts.

Somebody asked me, "How many hours of labor are put into this project?" No one keeps track, but I think if we knew, we'd be overwhelmed.

I'm very proud to be a part of this truly Christian community.

                                                      – Mary Kaylor

Sunrise Children's Library

The Children’s Library has been humming this Spring!  Sunday morning during 10:30 worship service, children have been having Children’s Church.  The children have an opportunity to listen to a story, sing a song or two, make a craft, and check out a book.

If you have visiting grandchildren, remember to stock up on books from the Children's Library.

Thursday mornings continue to see all the Hope Creative School students visiting the Sunrise center, selecting books to take home and read with their parents, and have story time with volunteer readers from Hope Church.  Lila Ptak has selected a day each month to share stories with the children.  Carol Stasiak has shared her clerical skills, helping to check out books, filing cards, and checking in returns.

Thank you to all the volunteers who have enjoyed reading to the children:  Lila Ptak, Carol Stasiak, Denise Ragatz, Sharon Mann, Sherry Summers, Jan Carmichael, Dot Carter, Pat Platt, and Florrie Ellen Hicks.  Many hands make lighter work!  Volunteers welcome!  Any questions?  Call Ann Wainscott or Sherry Summers.

A Word of Hope from Stephen Ministry:

Just call Stephen Ministers the “after” people —

after the doctors have said there’s nothing more they can do, or after a loved one has passed away;

after a relationship ends, but the wounds are still bleeding;

after your family and friends have heard your story one too many times, but you still need to talk;

after you find the pink slip in what’s now your final paycheck.

These are examples of when Stephen Ministers can be called upon for help. Stephen Ministry is a free and confidential service for people who are struggling with a special need or going through a difficult time. They are paired with lay persons who have been trained as Stephen Ministers to offer Christian support and care.

We would love to talk with anyone who feels they may need a Stephen Minister to help them through tough times. We are here to serve the congregation. Bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:2)

There is also a need for additional Stephen Minister candidates and we invite anyone to call us (324-4223) for questions about any aspect of the Stephen Ministry program.

Jeff and Joyce Vose, Directors
