New members are always welcome, and music reading skills are not necessary.
The Youth Choir follows a method of training used by the
Royal School of Church Music in Great Brittan.
Singers earn levels of ribbons by completing
tasks and demonstrating skills appropriate to that level:
White
Ribbon - Beginner
To earn the white
ribbon, singers participate appropriately at their level in
rehearsals and services, follow the lead of older singers, sing in
church at least three times, and attend at least 80 percent of the
scheduled rehearsals for the year.
Light
Blue Ribbon -
Junior Singer
To earn the light
blue Junior Singer ribbon, singers fully participate in
rehearsals and worship services.
Attendance at rehearsals and scheduled services is very
important, requiring a 90% attendance rate. Junior
Singers demonstrate a basic knowledge of music reading and notation,
follow the service bulletin, match pitch and sing basic exercises.
Singers learn basics of Christian understanding, including
basics of the Bible and familiarity with the hymnal.
Dark
Blue Ribbon - Senior Singer
To earn a dark blue Senior
Singer ribbon, singers attend rehearsals and services,
demonstrate ability to sing hymns after three readings, demonstrate
basic sight reading skills, and participate as a soloist in
rehearsals, and demonstrate correct singing technique for younger
singers.
Red
Ribbon - Chorister
To earn the red
Chorister ribbon, the singer demonstrates mastery of sight
reading skills, musical notation, and correct singing technique.
An assessment of the singer's Christian understanding and
personal qualities - leadership, mentoring younger singers, and
independent singing - is also completed.
Each Chorister sings a solo
in a worship service before this ribbon is earned.

In addition to singing (and quite often,
a light snack), the Youth Choir
also learns to play the Choir Chimes (those long bars that look a
bit like tuning forks).
